On the night of Dec. 12, just weeks after winning an NBA championship in the Disney World bubble, the Lakers were back on a basketball court in preparation for a new season. As the stars of the team rested for the night, the subject of this pre-season scrum was Anthony Davis’ new sneakers, a funky pair of Nikes called Cosmic Unity. It seemed natural for readers to connect the offbeat name with the overriding theme of togetherness, an urgent call given that global teamwork is the only real way to move green efforts forward.
Cosmic Unity may have an unintended double meaning, but it started internally as a massive unified effort within the Nike production ecosystem. This multi-pronged collaboration within Nike allowed the traditional shoe design team and color experts to work with materials engineering experts to create performance materials that incorporate recycled materials. Much like the Space Hippie shoes, which cannibalized trash and turned trash into exciting lifestyle shoes, the Cosmic Unity was created with 25% recycled materials by weight, creating their first-ever sustainable basketball shoe.
The sole is where major jumps can be made. The full-length Zoom strobe eliminates excess material while maximizing response by allowing the player’s foot to directly contact the Zoom bag (the full-length Zoom strobe was introduced in the Nike KD 12). Crater Foam, an exclusive recycled foam with integrated Nike Grind rubber pieces, is used for the entire sole, but an even finer grind has been used specifically for basketball, simultaneously creating a grittier look. Finally, the rubber sole (the heaviest component of the shoe) is a thin-banded rubber to reduce weight.
The Nike Cosmic Unity is just the latest in Nike’s enduring efforts, but arguably the most eye-catching thanks to lead designer Ross Klein. It’s a purpose-built shoe with green endeavors and performance in mind, while bringing much-needed energy to basketball with one of the most dazzling sneakers to date. Alongside the “Green Glow” launch colorway, one of the “Space Hippie” with the signature light blue and orange, and a third “Amalgam” depicts the view of planet Earth from space. The Nike Cosmic Unity will officially launch at retail in the “Green Glow” colorway on February 25, 2021 for $120. “Space Hippie” and “Amalgam” colorways will release later in the Spring/Summer 2021 season. Check out official Nike images of all three colorways below along with the up-and-coming basketball legend and defender of the A’ja Wilson sustainability.
